This is a new school which started operation in June 2010 and it is located in Country Homes Sub-division, Cabantian, Davao City.
The families in the surrounding communities were working as construction workers of the housing societies that developed around the area. When construction work was done and there wasn’t much to do, these families built small huts or one room shacks, on the surrounding hills and started living there. Because of lack of jobs and subsequent financial difficulties, many children did not go to school.
Many seven year old children and their parents approached ABC staff in order to get some help for their children who had never ever been to a school. ABC took this situation as a challenge to help these deserving children. They have been admitted to pre-school classes and the teacher is going to give special attention to their needs in order to make it possible for them to complete three levels of pre-school education in one. After that the teacher will work with them, in collaboration with the department of education, to speed up their progress so they can complete two grades in one year till they reach a level which fits their age.
As you go around visiting and talking to parents in this community, you come across stories and situations which are really heart breaking. Every family is going through a lot of challenges. Everyone is struggling to put food on the table for their children and such situations put education at the lowest priority level. Parents and community members are so thankful to ABC that one of their major concerns has been addressed and the education needs of their children will be met through the school that has been established there. Currently 96 students are enrolled in this school.
